GRAMMAR

This page is for notes on Mishnaic Hebrew.  It is under construction.

I am aware of only two grammars for Mishnaic Hebrew.  The best known is the one by M. H. Segal.  It was published by Oxford, and it is now republished by Wipf & Stock (2001).

A newer (and much more expensive -c. $100) one is the following:

  • Pérez Fernández, M. 1997. An Introductory Grammar of Rabbinic Hebrew. Leiden: Brill.

Any additional information on this subject is welcome.

Dr.  Isaac Jerusalmi has put together a “summary” of Segal’s grammar – and this is what I hope to post here (with his permission) in the near future.

For a very brief history of the Hebrew language by Chaim Rabin, see:

Welcome Mark. If you have something to contribute with too, please let me know. Thanks.

UPDATE: I consider that Fernandez’ 1997 grammar is superb for introducing students to Rabbinic Hebrew. Next time I teach this class I will use this as a textbook without any hesitation (it looks like it can be bought these days for only $80 from Brill?).

Note: It is true that this is the ONLY introductory grammar in English.
